Challenging Conditions Awaiting Mühlbauer and Spitz
Kathi Mühlbauer and Emma Spitz are facing a tense situation at the Lalla Meryem Cup held at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco. Despite the pressure, both players are poised to make a significant impact following a series of disappointing weekends. This season has seen both competitors achieve commendable results on the Ladies European Tour, yet their recent performances have left much to be desired. The duo missed the cut at the German Masters held in Hamburg last week, marking a noticeable downturn in their form. However, with the shift to warmer and more favorable weather conditions in Morocco, they are optimistic about turning their fortunes around.
Mühlbauer's Strong Start
Kathi Mühlbauer commenced her tournament on Thursday afternoon and quickly found her rhythm on the Blue Course. After a steady start, she encountered her first challenge on the 14th hole, where she recorded her first bogey. Nevertheless, Mühlbauer responded well, finishing the front nine at par and then surging ahead with consecutive birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes, bringing her close to the top 10. A second bogey on the 6th hole momentarily slowed her progress, but she regained momentum with another birdie on the final long hole, ultimately carding a solid 71 (-2) and positioning herself well for the second day, sitting in 13th place.
Carrying the positive momentum into Friday, Mühlbauer swiftly secured a birdie on the 2nd hole, and another on the 4th propelled her into the top 5. Unfortunately, a bogey on the 8th and another misstep right after the turn disrupted her flow. Despite a brief recovery with a birdie on the 11th, she suffered three bogeys over the next four holes, significantly affecting her standing. A double bogey on her final hole left her with a disappointing 77 (+4) for the round, casting doubt on her ability to make the cut, which ultimately settled at 2 over par.
Emma Spitz, starting later in the day, had to exercise patience as she began her round. Her performance on the challenging course began promisingly with a birdie on the 14th hole, but a series of bogeys from the 16th to the 18th saw her finish the front nine at 2 over par. The struggles continued on the back nine, with additional bogeys on the 2nd and 4th holes. Although she managed to recover from her mistakes, a score of 75 (+2) left her just behind the expected cut mark as she entered Friday’s play.
In her second round, Spitz began confidently, making par before securing her first birdie on the 5th hole. However, she quickly encountered difficulties, with a bogey on the 7th hole bringing her back to even par. As she navigated the back nine, her game fluctuated, and despite a brief resurgence, finishing with a score of 73 (par) meant she, too, faced an anxious wait to see if she would make it through to the final day of competition.
