Kempower and APM Terminals Forge Global Partnership for Electric Charging Solutions
The leading manufacturer of charging infrastructure, Kempower, has joined forces with APM Terminals, a prominent port operator, to establish a global framework agreement aimed at delivering rapid charging solutions for port terminals. Initial pilot projects are already underway in Mexico, Morocco, and Peru, marking a significant step towards the electrification of port operations.
With the implementation of DC charging infrastructure, APM Terminals intends to advance the electrification of its fleet, particularly focusing on battery-electric container handlers that are designed to eventually replace diesel-powered vehicles and machinery. According to Kempower, this agreement significantly supports APM Terminals' decarbonization strategy, aligning with global sustainability goals.
Mathias Wiklund, the Chief Sales Officer of Kempower, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are honored to be part of APM Terminals' electrification strategy and to support their net-zero goals. Kempower's robust and reliable charging technology will assist APM Terminals in keeping their electric fleet operational and optimizing their operations." This partnership underscores the commitment of both organizations to fostering environmentally friendly practices within the logistics and transportation sectors.
However, the framework agreement does not specify concrete order volumes as it is structured to allow APM Terminals the flexibility to place individual orders with Kempower based on their investment plans and operational needs. APM Terminals, which operates container terminals across 35 countries and is part of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, will issue orders to Kempower as required. The Finnish charging infrastructure provider noted, "Kempower will announce significant orders in accordance with company policy once they are confirmed."
It is clear that over the next three years, Kempower charging systems are set to be installed at various APM Terminals locations. The first three pilots have been initiated at APM Terminals Yucatán in Mexico, TM2 in Morocco, and Callao in Peru, where electric vehicles will be supported in terminal operations.
