Kenitra-Marrakech LGV Project Achieves 30% Milestone, On Track for 2029 Completion

Significant Progress on the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Project

In a remarkable development for Morocco’s transportation infrastructure, the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail line (LGV) has surpassed the 30% completion mark, as announced by Abdessamad Kayouh, Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics. During a recent parliamentary session focused on the advancement of rail transport, the minister confirmed that the ambitious project remains firmly on schedule for its anticipated completion by September 2029. This 430-kilometer line is set to significantly enhance connectivity between Rabat and Marrakech, reducing travel times by over two hours compared to currently available rail options.

This high-speed rail initiative stands as one of Morocco's most extensive transportation infrastructure projects, contributing to a broader strategy aimed at expanding the nation's high-speed rail network. Furthermore, Minister Kayouh revealed that the feasibility studies for a prospective extension of the rail line to Agadir have been successfully completed, with the projected cost for this extension estimated at a staggering MAD 55 billion (approximately $5.9 billion).

Complex Terrain and Financing Challenges

The proposed route traverses the challenging High Atlas region, where the intricate landscape necessitates the construction of numerous bridges and tunnels, accounting for approximately 70% of the project’s overall infrastructure. As discussions regarding financing evolve, Morocco is expected to seek support from international funding partners. The timeline for the Agadir extension will largely depend on the availability of external financial resources, highlighting the critical nature of international collaboration in executing such an expansive project.
