Kenyan Athletes Set to Shine at the Rabat Diamond League

Kenya's Elite Athletes Gear Up for the Rabat Diamond League

On April 24, 2026, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the reigning Olympic and world champion, celebrated an impressive victory in the 1,500m event at the Kip Keino Classic held at Nyayo Stadium. This victory sets the stage for a thrilling showcase of Kenyan talent at the upcoming Rabat Diamond League scheduled for Sunday night, where world 800m champion Lilian Odira will take center stage in the women's 800m race at 9:28 PM EAT. This marks only the second appearance of Odira in the Diamond League circuit, following her remarkable debut in Silesia, where she clocked a time of 1:56.52, finishing just behind Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson.

In Rabat, Odira is set to face a formidable lineup that includes Olympic silver medallist Tsige Duguma, world indoor silver medallist Audrey Werro, USA's Addison Wiley, and South Africa's world indoor champion Prudence Sekgodiso. Additionally, Botswana's Oratile Nowe and Ethiopia's Nigist Getachew, who previously bested Odira at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, are expected to challenge her significantly, adding to the excitement of this competitive field.

Exciting Races Ahead for Kenyan Stars

At 9:57 PM EAT, the spotlight will shift to the men's 1,500m, featuring world bronze medallist Reynold Cheruiyot, who is on the hunt for his first Diamond League victory. Cheruiyot made a strong start to his season with a second-place finish in a 3,000m race in Shanghai, where he clocked 7:26.11. Last year, he narrowly missed victory at the Rabat meeting, finishing second in 3:31.78 behind Kenyan-born American Jonah Koech. This time around, he will contend with a highly competitive field that includes Portugal's world champion Isaac Nader, USA's Yared Nuguse, France's Azeddine Habz, and Ethiopia's steeplechase world record-holder Lamecha Girma, along with Kenya's Festus Lagat.

In the women’s 1,500m, Kenyan athletes Caren Chepchirchir and Nancy Jepng’etich will take on a strong Ethiopian team, promising an electrifying contest. Following this, Emmanuel Wanyonyi will make his Diamond League season debut in the men's 800m at 10:35 PM EAT. The 21-year-old is eager for redemption after finishing third in Rabat last year with a time of 1:43.37, trailing Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela and Britain’s Max Burgin. Wanyonyi has shown great promise this year, having won the 1,500m at the 2026 Kip Keino Classic with a time of 3:34.11, defeating both Reynold Cheruiyot and Daniel Munguti. However, in Rabat, he will face another world-class lineup, including USA's 2019 world champion Donavan Brazier, Britain's Max Burgin, and Ireland's Mark English, who triumphed in the Diamond League 800m in Shanghai.

The night will culminate in a high-stakes men’s 3,000m steeplechase, set for 10:46 PM EAT, featuring Kenya’s world bronze medallist Edmund Serem. Serem will have the challenging task of competing against Morocco’s double Olympic and two-time world champion Soufiane El Bakkali in front of an enthusiastic home crowd. New Zealand's world champion Geordie Beamish is also in the mix, promising an exciting reunion of the complete World Championships podium in Rabat. After finishing fourth at the Kip Keino Classic, Serem is determined to deliver a stronger performance this time around, alongside fellow Kenyan competitors Simon Koech and Abraham Serem, who will also represent their country in this prestigious event.
