Political Tensions Rise as Lashkar Takes Aim at Opposition

In a recent rally dedicated to presenting the party's candidates in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, Idriss Lashkar, the Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), unleashed a barrage of criticism against certain opposition figures, particularly targeting Abdelilah Benkirane, the Secretary-General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD). Lashkar accused these opposition members of hijacking the political and legislative initiatives spearheaded by his party during the current legislative term, asserting that the USFP has been at the forefront of critical legal and political battles.

Lashkar highlighted the USFP's proactive stance in challenging the constitutionality of laws related to the Constitutional Court and the National Press Council, along with advocating for spatial justice and electoral reform throughout its regional conferences. He emphasized that the activation of the regional development fund and the cleansing of electoral rolls, which revealed two million incorrect registrations, were achieved due to the King's high directives. Furthermore, he stated that his party was the first to propose a motion of censure against the government, attempting to unify the opposition around this initiative. However, Benkirane reportedly withdrew from participation simply because the initiative originated from the USFP.

Continuing his critique, Lashkar dismissed what he termed the weekly outcry and claims of leading the opposition, asserting that courageous political work requires initiative and on-the-ground efforts within the corridors of the legislative institution, rather than mere spectator engagement. In response to allegations regarding his party making deals with the government majority, Lashkar challenged Benkirane to cease his skepticism and refrain from capitalizing on the efforts of others. He invoked historical precedents, revealing his own renunciation of the ministerial pension of 40,000 dirhams per month since leaving the government in 2011, urging his opponents to reveal who among the PJD ministers has made similar sacrifices.

Lashkar concluded his address by urging his party members to remain vigilant against circulating rumors and to verify information through official and historical sources, quoting a sacred verse that calls for discernment and caution against unreliable news.
