The King Mohammed VI Foundation for the Publication of the Quran in Morocco has unveiled a significant new translation of the Quran titled 'Muhammad Mushaf' in the Sous-Amazigh language. This initiative demonstrates the Foundation's commitment to promoting diversity in Quranic works and translating the meanings of the Quran into prevalent languages both within and beyond Morocco. The publication aims to make the divine message of God accessible to speakers of the Amazigh language, particularly the Tashelhit dialect, which is the most widely spoken Amazigh language.
The translation has been meticulously crafted in Arabic script, incorporating full diacritical marks and annotations to facilitate reading and comprehension of the Quranic text. It adheres to the writing rules developed by the Moroccan scholar Mohammed Mokhtar Soussi, ensuring clarity and ease of understanding for readers. A dedicated scientific committee oversaw the translation process, deliberately avoiding obscure, outdated, or newly coined terms while emphasizing the use of the standard dialect of the Sous region. This approach ensures that the language used is familiar and comprehensible to the local population.
The tradition of translating Quranic meanings, prophetic traditions, and religious texts is a long-standing educational practice among the Amazigh, aimed at simplifying the content of verses and aiding the understanding and derivation of religious provisions. The Mushaf itself is presented in a large Dschami format, measuring 35 × 25 centimeters, featuring a striking ivory white cover adorned with a gilded central pattern. It comprises 1,278 pages, with the Quranic text printed in the Maghribi Mabsut script on one side and the Sous-Amazigh translation on the opposite side, both enclosed in a rectangular frame.
Decorative margins inspired by Amazigh culture highlight the text's organization, with structural markers and separators between the Surahs elegantly positioned along the page borders. The scientific integrity of the translation was ensured by a distinguished committee of experts and thinkers from the Sous region, who conveyed the meanings of the verses according to precise scholarly and impartial standards.
