The Implications of Israel's 'Yellow Line' on Lebanese Sovereignty
In an exclusive interview with "Le Maghreb," Lebanese analyst and writer Khodr Raslan addressed the recent developments in southern Lebanon following the ceasefire agreement, focusing on the concept of the "yellow line" declared by the occupying state and its serious implications for Lebanese sovereignty. Raslan clarified that this so-called "yellow line" is an imaginary frontline established by the Israeli enemy within Lebanese territory. He pointed out that this line is subjected to full Israeli fire control, intended to prevent local residents from crossing it or returning to their villages. Raslan contended that this measure represents an attempt to impose a buffer zone under the pretext of flimsy security reasons such as "protecting civilians," while its core objective is to institutionalize a new reality of occupation that disregards international covenants.
Resistance's Stance and the Ground Situation
Raslan emphasized that the Lebanese resistance categorically rejects this proposition, underscoring that the implementation of Resolution 1701 or any serious ceasefire agreement necessarily requires a complete Israeli withdrawal to the international borders. He noted that the resistance will not accept a return to the pre-war power dynamics after 15 months of conflicts and atrocities, asserting that the situation will remain "fragile" and open to all possibilities as long as the occupation persists on Lebanese lands. Furthermore, Raslan revealed the extent of the damage caused by this line, indicating that it isolates and denies residents access to numerous villages, with estimates ranging from 55 to 90 affected communities. He described these lines (both blue and yellow) as "illusory lines" enforced by the reality of the situation in the absence of a deterrent international stance. He concluded his remarks by affirming, based on field data and resistance reports, that this line "will not pass" and will not be accepted as a sustainable security reality.
In light of these developments, media reports indicated that Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri clearly warned that the continued Israeli occupation of positions in the south or attempts to delineate what is termed "yellow lines" will lead to daily resistance from the occupation forces. Berri asserted that "Lebanon cannot afford to cede even one meter," citing that Lebanese history is marked by resistance against occupation until withdrawal. On another front, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that the campaign's goal is to disarm Hezbollah through military and diplomatic means, warning that the military will undertake this task if the Lebanese government fails to meet its obligations, according to his claims. As the occupying state attempts to maintain this line to impose a new reality and expand its territory at the expense of Lebanon's sovereignty and land, the Lebanese government prepares for a second round of direct negotiations with the enemy state amid fears of the security and political repercussions for Lebanon in favor of the occupying state, which seeks to achieve through negotiations what it failed to accomplish through direct warfare in southern Lebanon.
