Investigation into the Fatal Building Collapse in Fez
In a significant development following the tragic collapse of two residential buildings in Fez, which occurred in December 2025 and resulted in the deaths of 22 individuals and injuries to 16 others, the public prosecutor has announced plans to initiate an investigation against 21 individuals. This decision comes after a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident, as stated by the Attorney General at the Fez Court of Appeal.
According to an official statement, the investigation was prompted by a report from the prosecutor of the Fez Court of First Instance, which highlighted the need to look into the conditions that led to the catastrophic event on December 9, 2025. The findings revealed that the collapsed buildings had undergone unauthorized construction, including additional floors that were erected without the necessary legal permits. Furthermore, it was discovered that substandard materials were used in the construction, and rights to airspace were unlawfully transferred. The issuance of occupancy certificates was also conducted in violation of existing laws and regulations.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
In light of these findings, the public prosecutor has formally requested the investigating judge to conduct preliminary investigations against the 21 individuals involved. The charges include involuntary manslaughter, causing unintentional injury, corruption, mismanagement of public funds, and the illegal issuance of administrative documents. The investigating judge has already ordered the detention of eight individuals while the remaining suspects will be investigated while free. The Attorney General emphasized the commitment to closely monitor the case and ensure that justice is served in accordance with the law, while also keeping the public informed about any new developments.
