Liverpool Set to Showcase Eight Players at the 2026 World Cup

Liverpool's Representation in the 2026 World Cup

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, Liverpool Football Club is poised to have a significant presence, with eight players selected to represent their respective national teams. This prestigious tournament, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has expanded to include 48 teams, making it a more competitive and thrilling event than ever before. The group stage is set to commence on Thursday, June 11, and the anticipation is palpable among fans and players alike.

Among the notable players, Alisson Becker has been named to the Brazilian squad for his third World Cup appearance, and he is expected to be the first Liverpool player to take the field in this tournament. Former Liverpool player Fabinho, now with Al-Ittihad, has also made the cut in Carlo Ancelotti's 26-man roster, showcasing the depth of talent that Liverpool has contributed to the international stage.

The Brazilian national team, known as Selecao, will kick off their campaign in Group C against semifinalists Morocco from the previous tournament, followed by a matchup against Haiti, and concluding the group stage with a highly anticipated clash against Scotland, captained by Liverpool's own Andy Robertson.

Another key player, Wataru Endo, has successfully recovered from a foot injury sustained earlier this year while playing for Liverpool and will serve as captain for Japan at the World Cup. Endo expressed his determination to return to form, stating, "It was not easy to recover from the injury, but I believed in myself and will continue to work hard to be fit for the games." In Group F, he will face off against four of his Liverpool teammates as Japan goes up against the Netherlands, Tunisia, and Sweden.

In the previous World Cup, Endo made four appearances, helping Japan advance from a challenging group that included Spain and Germany, only to be eliminated in the Round of 16 by Croatia in a dramatic penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Ryan Gravenberch represents the only member of the Dutch trio from Liverpool who has yet to experience a World Cup, while his teammates were part of the Netherlands squad that reached the quarter-finals in Qatar, where they lost to Argentina in another tense penalty shootout.

Cody Gakpo made headlines with his goal-scoring performances during the group stage of the last World Cup before securing a transfer from PSV Eindhoven to Anfield. The Netherlands will start their 2026 campaign against Endo’s Japan, followed by matches against Sweden and Tunisia.

Another Liverpool player, Alexander Isak, will be making his World Cup debut after his nation failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament. Sweden secured their spot for 2026 through the UEFA Nations League playoffs, demonstrating their resilience and determination on the international stage.

Additionally, Mac Allister will be looking to help Argentina become the third nation to win consecutive men's World Cups, following Brazil's victories in 1958 and 1962 and Italy's earlier achievements in 1934 and 1938. Under the leadership of Lionel Messi, who will be participating in his sixth World Cup at the age of 38, Argentina aims to assert their dominance in Group J, starting against Algeria and continuing with matches against Austria and Jordan.

Florian Wirtz, who missed the last World Cup due to a severe knee injury, is eager to finally experience this global event. The 23-year-old recently shared, "There is nothing bigger than the World Cup. You dream of this as a child. If I get to play in this year’s tournament, it will be a childhood dream come true." After winning the trophy in 2014, Germany has struggled to progress past the group stage in 2018 and 2022. In the upcoming tournament, they will face Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador in Group E.
