Lorenzo Sonego Shares Recovery Progress and Ambitions for Marrakech Return

Lorenzo Sonego's Road to Recovery

In a recent interview with SuperTennis, Italian tennis star Lorenzo Sonego provided an insightful update on his recovery from a wrist injury that has kept him off the courts. Currently training at the Circolo della Stampa-Sporting in Turin, Sonego expressed optimism about his progress, stating, "The wrist issue is improving, and I am on the right track." Although he has made strides in his rehabilitation, he confirmed that he will unfortunately miss the prestigious Masters 1000 event in Miami.

Sonego has not competed since his second-round exit at the Australian Open, where he faced fellow countryman Lorenzo Musetti. The duo had previously celebrated success together, winning a doubles title in Hong Kong. Reflecting on his time away from the game, Sonego admitted, "I had hoped to return to the court sooner. I was targeting the Rio event but had to withdraw from both Indian Wells and Miami as well." His dedication to returning to full fitness remains strong as he aims for a comeback at the upcoming tournament in Marrakech.

Injury Insights and Future Aspirations

Discussing the nature of his wrist injury, Sonego revealed that previous issues had resolved within a week, but this particular setback has proven to be more challenging. He traced the origin of the pain back to his matches in Hong Kong, where he pushed through discomfort to compete at the Australian Open, ultimately complicating his recovery. "I still feel some discomfort and am not at 100% yet, but I am hopeful to heal completely and return to the clay courts soon," Sonego explained. His determination to overcome this hurdle and compete again exemplifies the resilience that athletes must maintain throughout their careers.
