Lorenzo Sonego Updates Fans on His Wrist Injury Recovery: Aiming for Marrakech Return

Lorenzo Sonego Eyes Comeback After Wrist Injury

After being sidelined for two months due to a wrist injury, Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego is optimistic about returning to competitive play. He has expressed aspirations to participate in a clay court tournament in Morocco at the end of March, specifically hoping to compete in Marrakech from March 30 to April 5. Sonego, currently ranked 61st in the world, has been absent from the professional circuit since his second-round loss to compatriot Lorenzo Musetti at the Australian Open in January. Initially, he had planned to return for several high-profile events, including the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, the Phoenix Challenger, and the Miami Masters 1000, but he has unfortunately had to withdraw from all three tournaments due to his ongoing recovery.

In a recent interview with SuperTennis, Sonego reflected on the challenges he has faced during his recovery process. He revealed, "My wrist issue is improving, and I'm on the right track. Unfortunately, I had to take a break for a while, but I’ve resumed training. I truly hope to be back in Marrakech." He admitted that he had anticipated returning for the Rio tournament, having dealt with minor wrist issues in the past that were typically short-lived. However, this time, the injury has proven to be more severe. Sonego recounted the onset of his wrist problem, which began in Hong Kong, stating, "I continued to play for two weeks to compete in the Australian Open, but it became increasingly difficult to recover. I still experience some discomfort and am not fully fit, but I’m hopeful to heal and return to clay courts."
