Madagascar Affirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity

Madagascar has reaffirmed its commitment to the principle of territorial integrity among United Nations Member States by expressing unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty and territorial claims. This significant stance was articulated in a joint communiqué following discussions held in Rabat on Tuesday between Madagascar’s Foreign Minister, Alice N’Diaye, and her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. This meeting served as a platform to strengthen diplomatic ties and enhance cooperation between the two nations.

In the joint communiqué, Madagascar reiterated its backing for the exclusive role of the United Nations in addressing international disputes, including the ongoing contention regarding the Sahara region. The island nation welcomed the recent adoption of Resolution 2797 by the United Nations Security Council, which underscores that a genuine autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty represents a viable solution to the dispute. Madagascar's endorsement of Morocco's Autonomy Initiative reflects a growing international consensus, further propelled by the leadership of King Mohammed VI.

During their productive talks, both ministers emphasized their mutual commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, driven by the spirit of South-South cooperation. They recognized that the dynamic partnership between Madagascar and Morocco is rooted in friendship, respect, and collaborative efforts. Minister N’Diaye praised the robust ties forged during King Mohammed VI's historic visit to Madagascar in 2016, a pivotal moment that revitalized cooperation across various sectors and contributed to sustainable development in Madagascar.

Another key development discussed was the opening of Madagascar's Embassy in Rabat, scheduled for November 2024. This new diplomatic institution is expected to invigorate bilateral relations and demonstrate a strong commitment to cooperation between the two countries. Both parties agreed to elevate their partnership to new heights in alignment with the vision of King Mohammed VI and Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, the President of Madagascar.

To further this commitment, they plan to convene the second session of the Joint Cooperation Commission in the upcoming months, with a focus on enhancing and diversifying cooperation across key sectors such as agriculture, health, renewable energy, youth employment, training, and security. These strategic discussions aim to address high-priority areas that will foster sustainable growth and mutual benefits.

In addition to these diplomatic endeavors, Morocco continues to tackle issues related to contraband and smuggling through a series of proactive measures. The nation is currently developing a free economic zone aimed at providing alternatives for local communities affected by smuggling activities. Furthermore, Morocco is advocating for Middle-Income Countries to leverage their capacities and become instrumental in regional and global development amidst the evolving world order. This was highlighted during the recent High-Level Ministerial Conference on Middle-Income Countries held in Rabat, where Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita addressed the need for collaboration and innovation.

As relations continue to evolve, Madagascar and Morocco are poised to deepen their partnership, fostering growth and stability within their regions.
