Major Drug Bust: 2.7 Tons of Cannabis Seized in International Trafficking Operation

International Drug Trafficking Operation Dismantled

On May 24, 2026, a significant crackdown on an international cannabis trafficking operation between Morocco and the Lille region was successfully executed by the French gendarmerie. This operation took place at the port of Sète and resulted in the seizure of nearly 2.7 tons of illegal narcotics. The authorities apprehended two individuals who are now facing serious charges, as announced by Lille's public prosecutor, Samuel Finielz.

The investigation commenced on April 13, 2026, when the Lille prosecutor's office instructed the Lille research section of the gendarmerie to investigate allegations of "membership in a criminal organization with the intent to prepare for crimes punishable by up to ten years of imprisonment,” as well as “importation of narcotics as part of an organized group” and “transport, acquisition, possession, offer, or sale and use of narcotics.”

Coordinated Efforts Lead to Successful Operation

The inquiries focused on a sophisticated international drug trafficking network designed to import cannabis from Morocco through maritime and land routes, primarily targeting the Lille judicial area. This operation was coordinated in collaboration with Morocco's General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), highlighting the cross-border nature of the drug trade.

On the day of the operation, authorities executed coordinated raids across four different sites in France, involving the Lille research section and supported by regional gendarmerie units from Hérault and Nord, as well as specialized units like the GIGN (National Gendarmerie Intervention Group). The operation culminated in the confiscation of 2,692 kilograms of narcotics, predominantly cannabis resin, which was found inside a vehicle upon its arrival at the port of Sète.

In addition to the drug seizure, the operation led to the arrest and detention of the vehicle’s driver and a suspected logistics operator. During a search of the latter’s residence in Île-de-France, authorities uncovered €34,000 in cash and a vehicle, further demonstrating the financial operations linked to the drug trade. Some of the seized narcotics were reportedly intended for distribution in the Lille metropolitan area.

As of May 28, a judicial investigation has been initiated, with the two arrested men facing serious charges. The first has been placed in temporary detention by a liberty and detention judge, while the second remains in custody pending a hearing scheduled for June 2, 2026. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by French authorities to combat drug trafficking and enhance public safety.
