Significant Drug Trafficking Operation in Portugal
In a significant law enforcement operation, Portuguese authorities have apprehended a Moroccan national involved in a large-scale cocaine trafficking attempt. The operation thwarted the smuggling of approximately 400 kilograms of cocaine, intended to be unloaded on the coast of Setúbal, located in southwestern Portugal. This incident once again highlights the extensive network of drug trafficking operations linked to Moroccan individuals within Europe.
The Portuguese Republican National Guard reported, as covered by the newspaper "Jornal de Notícias", that their coastal and border surveillance unit detected suspicious activities in the Serra da Arrábida area. This led to the discovery of a drug unloading operation from a boat onto the beach at Albarquel. Utilizing a drone for aerial surveillance, authorities monitored the movements along the coast before deploying security units to intervene successfully, leading to the arrest of one participant and the seizure of ten packages of cocaine, weighing a total of around 400 kilograms.
The arrested individual, a 21-year-old Moroccan, was residing illegally in Portugal. Meanwhile, seven accomplices from the criminal network fled on foot towards the Serra da Arrábida region, while others managed to return to the boat and escape the scene. This operation brings to light the recurring involvement of Moroccans in drug trafficking cases dismantled by European security agencies, amidst the ongoing activity of transnational networks that transport substantial quantities of narcotics through European shores and ports.
Portuguese forces are actively pursuing the escaped individuals and working to identify the remaining members of the group. This investigation is also focusing on tracing the source of the shipment and the entities responsible for organizing its transport and unloading, aiming to dismantle the criminal network behind this operation and uncover its broader connections.
