Fes City Takes a Strategic Step to Mitigate Flood Risks
In a significant move aimed at safeguarding the city of Fes from the impending threats of flooding, a new project has been launched in the Ain Smen Valley with a budget exceeding 14.4 million dirhams. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance water resource management and ensure the safety of both residents and property. The project, which is set to span over a duration of 12 months, focuses on the section connecting the Bensouda Road (Regional Road 716) to the Fes River. A series of technical works will be undertaken to improve water drainage and mitigate flood risks.
The planned works include the construction of rectangular or trapezoidal water channels, alongside crossing installations such as culverts and the development of access slopes specifically designed for the maintenance of these channels. This approach guarantees the efficient functioning of these infrastructures while complementing other important projects initiated in recent months—most notably, the flood protection of the Mahrza Valley with a financial commitment of approximately 108 million dirhams.
Furthermore, it is noteworthy that last year saw an investment mobilization exceeding 300 million dirhams targeting structural projects primarily aimed at upgrading the sewage network and protecting the city from flooding. This reflects a growing commitment to bolster the region's water infrastructure. Among the most significant projects is the main drainage system for the Fes River, where the first phase involves the construction of 4 kilometers of sewage channels with a budget of 200 million dirhams. This development is expected to divert around 90% of the wastewater currently flowing beneath the ancient city, thus protecting this UNESCO World Heritage site from environmental hazards.
In addition, various complementary projects are currently underway, including the "Mait" and "Himer" complexes, spanning 8 kilometers with a budget of 151 million dirhams, aimed at strengthening the sewage network and alleviating pressure on existing infrastructures. These projects embody a comprehensive vision to enhance flood protection for Fes while improving water resource management, thereby ensuring the safety of the population and the sustainability of urban infrastructure. They reflect the commitment of responsible authorities to implement integrated solutions that combine prevention, future planning, and the preservation of the city's cultural heritage.
