According to our correspondent in Casablanca, Matthias Raynal, a recently dismantled terrorist cell in Morocco reportedly received direct orders from leaders of the Sahel branch of the Islamic State organization. These instructions urged the members to carry out attacks within Moroccan territory, as indicated by initial findings from the investigation shared by the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations.
While specific details regarding potential targets remain undisclosed, preliminary preparations by the cell were notably advanced. The alleged leader of this terrorist group had begun assigning roles among its members, with some tasked specifically with identifying targets, while another group was responsible for reconnaissance and surveillance. A third team was designated to handle the procurement of necessary materials.
Of the ten individuals arrested during this operation, nine are still in custody, while one minor has been placed under observation.
A Coordinated Operation Across Multiple Cities
This extensive crackdown executed by Moroccan authorities involved simultaneous actions across several cities from north to south, including major locations such as Casablanca and Agadir. During the searches, law enforcement officials discovered a range of items including bladed weapons, military uniforms, and even instructions for making explosive devices. Furthermore, Moroccan anti-terrorism units uncovered a modified all-terrain vehicle that could be utilized for either a suicide attack or a vehicle-ramming incident, as specified in the official statement.
Additionally, investigators seized gas canisters and pressure cookers, some of which were filled with nails, further underscoring the serious threat posed by this group.
Regular Disruptions of Terror Cells in Morocco
Moroccan authorities frequently announce the dismantling of terrorist cells, with several operations occurring each year. The latest operation took place in April, resulting in the arrest of six individuals. Some disruptions are more significant than others, and the one on July 6, 2026, stands out due to the substantial materials discovered. The last time Moroccan anti-terrorism services unearthed such advanced preparations was in February 2025, when authorities neutralized a network and uncovered a cache of weapons that included ten pistols and two Kalashnikov assault rifles wrapped in newspapers printed in Mali.
Since the tragic Marrakech bombing in 2011 that claimed 17 lives, Morocco has not experienced any major terrorist attacks, showcasing the effectiveness of its ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
