Strong Support for Cooperation with Morocco Among Spaniards

In a recent survey conducted by the Sociological Research Center (CIS), a significant majority of Spaniards advocate for strengthening their strategic alliance with Morocco, viewing it as essential for maintaining stability and security at the borders. The findings, published on December 14, 2023, reveal that 86.3% of participants place considerable importance on fostering positive relations with Rabat, while only 10.1% regard this aspect as trivial. Border Security and the Regional Context

The survey, which included responses from 4,042 individuals, indicates a robust call for enhanced border surveillance, with 82.2% of respondents deeming such measures necessary. This urgency is fueled by contemporary migration challenges, prompting 89.4% of Spaniards to urge greater involvement from the European Union to assist the Spanish government in managing the crisis in Ceuta.

While the sovereignty of Ceuta and Melilla is largely defended, with 77.1% affirming that these cities are as Spanish as any other region, the uniqueness of their geopolitical status is contentious. Approximately 14.3% of those surveyed believe that these locations embody an "ambiguous and special" situation that warrants direct negotiations with Rabat to address the complexities of this border reality.

Furthermore, the survey uncovers a prevailing atmosphere of distrust regarding regional dynamics, with 67.7% of respondents suggesting that external influences may have sought to exacerbate tensions between Madrid and Rabat.
