Man Sentenced for Exploiting Elderly Woman's Vulnerability
In a shocking case that has captured public attention, Matthieu Tabaud, a 46-year-old man, was sentenced to eleven years in prison for exploiting the vulnerability of Jeanne Narbout, a 94-year-old widow. Tabaud was found guilty of draining nearly €830,000 from her estate and subsequently relocating her to Morocco, where she was later discovered living alone in a nursing home. The verdict, delivered on May 19, 2026, has sparked discussions about the protection of the elderly against financial abuse and the responsibilities of caretakers.
The investigation revealed that Tabaud had begun his relationship with Narbout in 2019 when she was just 88 years old. Initially, Narbout moved in with Tabaud, a wine salesman nearly 49 years her junior, after which they entered into a civil partnership. During the trial, Tabaud referred to Narbout as his "heart godmother," claiming that all his actions were intended to benefit her, and he dismissed the allegations as mere "errors in management." However, the evidence presented by law enforcement painted a different picture, highlighting a systematic approach to siphoning funds from Narbout’s various accounts, including life insurance policies and real estate purchases.
Details of the Scheme and Its Aftermath
Throughout their relationship, Tabaud engaged in several banking operations that resulted in significant financial loss for Narbout. He closed her accounts, transferred funds to his own accounts, and manipulated her financial assets to amass an estimated €830,000. This elaborate scheme culminated in Tabaud sending Narbout to live in Casablanca, far from her familiar surroundings. Reports indicate that when authorities apprehended Tabaud in France, he was found with Narbout's bank card, insisting that she was in good health in Morocco.
The case took a more disturbing turn when Narbout's condition was later revealed. A representative from the French consulate in Morocco confirmed that Narbout, disoriented and confused, expressed a desire to return to France. Tragically, she passed away on July 13, 2025, in the nursing home, marking the end of a life that had been marred by betrayal and exploitation. Tabaud’s defense team attempted to separate the financial misconduct from the charges of kidnapping and confinement, arguing that while he may have exploited Narbout financially, there was no actual abduction. With a prior conviction for similar offenses, Tabaud now faces a ten-day window to appeal the decision.
