Manuel Pellegrini Discusses Controversy Surrounding AFCON Final

Manuel Pellegrini's Insights on the AFCON Title Controversy

In a recent disclosure, Manuel Pellegrini, the seasoned coach of Real Betis, shared his thoughts regarding the triumph of his players Sufyan Amrabat and Abdel-Samad El-Zalzouli, who were awarded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title for 2025 with the Moroccan national team. His comments come in the wake of the African Football Confederation's (CAF) decision to strip Senegal of the title and award it to Morocco, following the Moroccan Football Federation's successful appeal that deemed the Senegalese team to have forfeited the final match with a score of 3-0 due to their withdrawal.

During a press conference held ahead of the match against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, Pellegrini elaborated on his discussions with the Moroccan stars. He stated, "I spoke with Amrabat and El-Zalzouli, and of course, winning the title is always significant; however, I do not believe it was achieved in the manner they would have preferred." The coach expressed his uncertainty regarding the justification of such actions, labeling the situation as highly complex. He emphasized that no team should be allowed to withdraw at their convenience, yet at the same time, he questioned the validity of crowning a champion after a match loss.

Pellegrini further reflected, saying, "Perhaps it would have been better to leave the title vacant. This matter is not straightforward, and making decisions on it is challenging. We will see what unfolds as time progresses." Previously, he had criticized the Senegalese team's reaction to Morocco's penalty in January, deeming their withdrawal from the match as inappropriate for the sport.
