Marisol Rojas Selected for Supreme Court Nomination
The Chilean government has officially submitted the nomination of Minister Marisol Rojas for a position on the Supreme Court, filling the vacancy left by former Supreme Court justice María Teresa Letelier, who retired in December of last year. This nomination is a significant step as it is based on a shortlist created by the Supreme Court itself, which included several distinguished candidates.
Among the candidates, the list was led by Eliana Quezada, a Minister of the Valparaíso Court of Appeals, followed by Juan Cristóbal Mera from the Santiago Court, and then Marisol Rojas, who currently serves as the president of the Santiago Court of Appeals. The other candidates included Jacqueline Nash, a judicial prosecutor from the Valparaíso Court, and Maritza Villadangos, another Minister from the Santiago Court.
Justice Minister Fernando Rabat ultimately chose Rojas, whose nomination now requires Senate approval with a two-thirds majority vote. At 63 years old, Rojas has an extensive background in law, having studied at the Catholic University and joining the judiciary in 1987 as a third-level officer at the 30th Civil Court in Santiago. Her career has seen a steady rise, including positions as a rapporteur at the Santiago Court, a presiding judge at the 28th Civil Court, and since 2012, as a Minister of the Santiago Court of Appeals, where she has served as president since 2026.
In addition to her judicial experience, Rojas has pursued further academic qualifications focusing on family law, competition law, and protective measures at institutions such as the University of Chile and the Catholic University, as well as the Judicial Studies Institute.
