Marrakech Air Show: A Major Aerospace Event
In light of increasing geopolitical tensions both regionally and globally, Morocco is poised to take significant strides in enhancing and modernizing its defense infrastructure. From October 7 to 10, the Royal Air Force base in Marrakech will host the Marrakech Air Show, a pivotal aerospace event that will bring together over 150 companies from the defense sector. This event notably highlights the participation of several major Israeli defense manufacturers, marking a deepening military and strategic partnership between Rabat and Tel Aviv.
A Technological Showcase for Defense Giants
According to information reported by Business Insider Africa, citing details from Calcalistech and Ctech, several leading Israeli defense companies will be present at the air show. Among these are Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Elbit Systems, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, and UVision. These firms will showcase a range of cutting-edge technologies, including air defense systems, reconnaissance and combat drones, precision weapons, and satellite technologies. IAI, for instance, is set to display its LORA precision strike missile, the Heron MK II drone, along with various space and air defense solutions.
This presence at the Marrakech Air Show aligns with Morocco's recent acquisitions of Israeli military equipment, which include advanced air defense systems such as the Barak 8 for approximately $500 million, participation in a satellite program valued at nearly $1 billion, and a diverse fleet of drones including Heron 1 (IAI) and Hermes 450 and 900 (Elbit Systems). Additionally, Morocco has invested in artillery systems, acquiring 36 ATMOS 2000 self-propelled howitzers in 2025, followed by the recent purchase of 8 to 12 PULS multiple rocket launchers for around $150 million.
Beyond merely acquiring military hardware, Morocco aims to foster local cooperation and knowledge transfer through discussions and agreements with these defense firms. The nation’s objective is to bolster its emerging aerospace and defense industry to enhance its industrial sovereignty. This push for modernization and strategic alliances is driven by Morocco's commitment to ensuring territorial security and stability amid a tense regional backdrop, particularly in light of ongoing disputes over the Sahara with Algeria. Furthermore, this initiative is complemented by strengthening diplomatic relations, as evidenced by the recent meeting between Foreign Ministers Nasser Bourita and Gideon Sa'ar, which aimed to elevate their diplomatic missions to full-fledged embassies.
