The Marrakech Court of Appeal has made a significant ruling on Thursday, sentencing Soukaina Janah, popularly known as Soukaina Glamour, to five months in prison, a marked reduction from the ten-year sentence that was handed down during the initial trial. This case has attracted considerable attention due to its implications for social media influencers and the boundaries of public decency.
On August 17, the initial court had sentenced the influencer to ten months of incarceration for public indecency, in addition to imposing a fine of 500 dirhams and a three-year ban on using social media. The controversy erupted after Soukaina Glamour livestreamed a video showcasing clothing available for sale in her boutique, during which she inadvertently revealed a private part of her body. Her reaction, which involved continuing the stream while laughing, ignited a firestorm of criticism across various online platforms.
The appeals court's decision not only halved her prison sentence but also reduced the social media ban from three years to just one year, providing some relief to the influencer. However, the fine of 500 dirhams remains unchanged, reflecting the court's stance on the matter. This incident is not Soukaina Janah's first brush with the law; she previously served a two-year prison sentence between 2019 and 2021 for her involvement in the 'Hamza Mon Bb' case, which revolved around charges of fraud, defamation, blackmail, and violations of privacy through digital means.
