Marrakech's Electric Bus Initiative
The city of Marrakech is set to undergo a significant transformation towards sustainability through a groundbreaking partnership between Morocco and South Korea. This collaboration will see the introduction of a fleet of 100% electric buses, supplied by the renowned automotive giant Hyundai. As part of this initiative, Hyundai Motor Company will deliver Hyundai Elec City electric buses to Marrakech under a public development aid project that is being facilitated by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA). The project encompasses not only the provision of the vehicles but also the installation of essential charging infrastructures and the implementation of training programs for their operation and maintenance.
A ceremonial event marked the completion of the first two buses at Hyundai's factory in Jeonju, South Korea, as reported by the Korean press. In total, 15 electric buses are expected to be delivered to Marrakech, representing the first electric buses produced in South Korea specifically for the Moroccan market. KOICA will play a crucial role in providing the buses, fast chargers, and related equipment, along with local technical training sessions.
Once operational, these electric buses will serve urban routes catering to popular tourist areas within Marrakech. A local handover ceremony is scheduled for the first quarter of 2027, coinciding with the completion of vehicle production and shipment.
Environmental Goals and Future Aspirations
This ambitious project aligns with Morocco's national low-carbon transition strategy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45.5% by 2030 compared to projected levels, ultimately striving for carbon neutrality by 2050. Park Cheol-yeon, the head of Hyundai Motor Company's Global Commercial & LCV Business division, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, "This project will serve as an example of how electric buses can enhance the potential for electrification in public transportation. We will provide eco-friendly commercial mobility solutions tailored to the operational conditions of various regions."
As the host of COP22, Marrakech's selection for this project is particularly fitting. Chafik Rachadi, Morocco's ambassador to South Korea, remarked on the symbolic importance of introducing Hyundai’s eco-friendly electric buses to Marrakech. He expressed hope that this initiative will signal a new beginning in the cooperation between South Korea and Morocco towards achieving carbon neutrality goals, enhancing user comfort, and building sustainable urban mobility.
