Marrakech Emerges as a Cultural Powerhouse: Ranked 12th Among World Cities for Art and Culture

Marrakech's Cultural Ascendancy in Global Rankings

Marrakech, long praised for its rich heritage, stunning architecture, and tourist appeal, is now solidifying its position as a leading cultural destination. The city has proudly secured the 12th spot on Time Out magazine's 2026 list of the best cities in the world for art and culture, a remarkable achievement that places it ahead of various international metropolises renowned for their artistic scenes.

This ranking was derived from the insights of over 24,000 residents across more than 150 cities, who evaluated the richness and accessibility of local cultural offerings. Their feedback was enhanced by a panel of journalists, editors, and cultural sector specialists, ensuring a comprehensive assessment of each city's cultural landscape.

According to Time Out, Marrakech stands out due to its ability to absorb global influences while reinterpreting them through a distinctly Moroccan identity. This vibrant dynamic has fostered the growth of an artistic ecosystem where heritage, contemporary creation, and innovative cultural initiatives coexist harmoniously.

A Diverse Cultural Landscape

Among the cultural highlights noted in the report is the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, a pivotal event in the African cultural calendar, alongside several recognized institutions and exhibition spaces like MACAAL, Comptoir des Mines, and Loft Art Gallery. However, the cultural richness of Marrakech extends beyond visual arts; the city is also celebrated for its musical offerings, hybrid venues, artist workshops, and establishments where creativity is at the forefront. Venues such as El Fenn and Dar des Arts play a crucial role in this vibrant atmosphere that attracts creators, collectors, and enthusiasts from around the globe each year.

The ranking further emphasizes several key institutions within Morocco’s cultural landscape, including the Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech, the Meydene Theatre, and the Marrakech International Film Festival, all of which contribute to the city's international prominence.

Data collected by Time Out reveals that 63% of respondents regard Marrakech's artistic and cultural scene as either 'good' or 'exceptional,' while 64% find it financially accessible. Concerts and museums emerged as the primary attractions highlighted by participants, illustrating the diverse offerings available in the city.

With London, Paris, and New York dominating the list, this ranking underscores Marrakech's burgeoning presence on the international cultural stage. As the sole representative of Morocco in this global selection, the city reflects the Kingdom’s increasing influence in the fields of culture, creativity, and the arts.
