Marrakech Extends Café Hours to 4 AM Amid World Cup Excitement

The upcoming World Cup has prompted Moroccan cities to reconsider their café operating hours, with Marrakech taking the lead by permitting cafes and restaurants to remain open until 4 a.m. This adjustment, effective from June 11 to July 19, aims to accommodate both residents and tourists eager to catch the late-night matches during the tournament. As the excitement builds, local councils across the country are implementing varying hours tailored to their specific needs, rather than adhering to a uniform national policy.

In contrast to Marrakech's decision, Agadir's communal council has indicated that cafés may extend their hours until 5 a.m., providing even more flexibility for fans. Meanwhile, Ouarzazate has also aligned with this trend, extending café and restaurant hours to coincide with World Cup broadcasts. However, Tangier is still deliberating whether to follow suit, and if so, whether the extended hours should apply to all matches or just those involving the Moroccan national team.

Casablanca has yet to finalize its stance on the matter. According to city council member Karim Kelaibi, there is currently no official directive regarding extended café hours due to the World Cup. He emphasized that any potential changes would need to undergo appropriate legal and consultative processes with local and regional authorities, ensuring clear communication with the public. Kelaibi also highlighted the importance of balancing public interest, tourism needs, and maintaining peace in the city.

While local authorities have been tasked with addressing noise complaints from residents, particularly concerning the use of loudspeakers and large outdoor screens, the Interior Ministry has clarified that no nationwide restrictions on café and restaurant hours have been instituted during Morocco's participation in the World Cup. Ultimately, decisions regarding opening and closing hours remain under the jurisdiction of local councils, allowing for a more tailored approach to accommodate the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the tournament.
