Marrakech Police Capture Endangered Goldfinches in a Successful Operation
In a significant enforcement action, the police unit from the historical city of Marrakech successfully apprehended a number of endangered goldfinches, commonly known as "Um Qanin," from an individual’s residence in the Al-Masira neighborhood of the Menara district. This operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trafficking, a pressing issue that threatens various species, including the goldfinch.
According to reliable sources, officers discovered twelve protected goldfinches confined within a large aviary on the roof of the suspect's home. Following the discovery, the birds were seized, and the owner was detained for questioning. The authorities later submitted the captured goldfinches to the regional water and forests management department in Marrakech, which will take the necessary steps to return them to their natural habitat.
While the suspect is currently under investigation, they face potential fines of up to 20,000 dirhams for each seized bird in their possession.
