Marrakech Short Film Festival: A Platform for Global Talent
From September 25 to 30, 2026, the sixth edition of the Marrakech Short Film Festival (MARRAKECHsFF) is set to elevate its commitment to the cinematic arts, aiming to become a pivotal arena for creativity, networking, and film circulation. This year’s festival promises to transcend the traditional boundaries of film exhibition, evolving into a vibrant platform that fosters connections among filmmakers, producers, programmers, institutions, and audiences. With over 400 short films submitted from more than 90 countries, the festival underscores its dedication to showcasing diverse cinematographies from across the globe.
International Jury and New Professional Initiatives
The festival's international essence is further emphasized by the composition of its juries. The international jury will be chaired by Turkish actress Tûba Büyüküstün, a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, alongside prominent figures such as British director Charlotte Regan and Alice Kharoubi, the programming director for the Cannes Film Market. The national competition will be led by Moroccan actor and director Rachid El Ouali, with the collaboration of actress and academic Jalila Talemsi and Hicham Brahimi. Their involvement extends beyond film evaluation; a series of masterclasses, discussions, and networking events are designed to facilitate meaningful exchanges with young filmmakers, students, and audiences alike.
Another highlight of this edition is the launch of Amanar, a new professional platform aimed at nurturing the film industry and project development. In collaboration with the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture (AFAC) and the British Council, Amanar will offer mentorship, professional networking, Industry Talks, and Pitch Days, aiming to provide emerging filmmakers with direct access to industry professionals who can assist them throughout their projects, from production to financing and distribution. Representatives from notable film festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, El Gouna, and Fespaco are expected to participate in this initiative.
The festival will also introduce "Bridges of Reality," a program focusing on African documentaries, diasporas, and representation issues. Developed in partnership with the Spanish embassy and curated by Alex Moussa Sawadogo, this initiative aims to enhance visibility for narratives told by African filmmakers themselves, positioning their perspectives and experiences at the forefront. Additionally, Malta will be featured as the guest country, showcasing a selection of Maltese short films that promise to open new avenues for cooperation between Morocco, the Mediterranean, and Europe. This initiative reflects MARRAKECHsFF's ambition to utilize cinema as a tool for dialogue and cultural diplomacy, creating bridges between various cinematic landscapes.
