Marrakech Set to Host the Cyber Games and Digital Security Challenge
The vibrant city of Marrakech is gearing up to host the upcoming edition of the "Cyber Games" and the "Digital Security Challenge" from May 19 to May 21, 2026. This prestigious competition is organized by the Council of Europe in collaboration with Interpol, the General Directorate of National Security, and the General Directorate of Information Systems Security. This event marks a significant milestone as it will be held for the first time on the African continent, drawing in approximately 160 experts and specialists in the fields of cybercrime prevention and cybersecurity from nearly 50 countries worldwide. This reflects a growing commitment among African nations to engage in international efforts to combat digital crimes and foster cross-border cooperation.
Enhancing Skills to Combat Cyber Threats
The primary objective of this event is to enhance the skills of professionals in addressing the increasing threats posed by cyberattacks, especially complex cyberattacks and ransomware crimes, as well as combating criminal networks involved in cryptocurrency laundering. The 2026 edition follows the success of the inaugural event held in Malaysia in 2025, where participants were selected from around 400 applicants through an online preliminary selection phase, highlighting the rising global interest in this event.
Over the course of three days, participants will engage in practical exercises and simulations of real-world scenarios within collaborative teams, aimed at improving coordination, cooperation, and the exchange of expertise in digital investigations and countering cybercrime. Virgil Spiridon emphasized that this initiative is a direct response to the rapidly evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals, who increasingly rely on encrypted communications, virtual currencies, and "crime-as-a-service" models to carry out attacks targeting critical infrastructure.
Moreover, Mohamed Dkhissi, the Deputy President of Interpol for Africa, underscored Morocco's commitment to enhancing information systems security and protecting digital sovereignty through a comprehensive strategy. This strategy focuses on developing a legal and institutional framework, modernizing technical capabilities, and strengthening regional and international cooperation in combating crimes related to modern technologies. He noted that these efforts align with Morocco's obligations under the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and its additional protocols, aimed at preventing and combating cybercrime on an international scale.
