Marrakech's Desalination Project Nears Completion, Ensuring Water Security for Residents

Marrakech's Desalination Project: A Beacon of Hope Amid Water Scarcity

The ambitious Safi-Marrakech desalination project is nearing its completion, currently standing at an impressive 98% completion. Designed to provide potable water to over one million residents, this monumental infrastructure is set to alleviate the ongoing water scarcity in the region. The project utilizes a robust network of 185 kilometers of high-strength steel pipelines to channel desalinated water to key areas, including Marrakech, Tamansourt, and the Ourika Valley. According to the Regional Multi-Service Company of Marrakech-Safi, the system is equipped with three major pumping stations, each capable of delivering a nominal flow rate of 3.2 cubic meters per second, ensuring a steady supply of water to meet the growing demands of the population.

The desalinated water undergoes regulation through a substantial 10,000 cubic meter reservoir located 18 kilometers from Marrakech before it is integrated into the distribution network. Engineers are currently finalizing critical compliance tests and fine-tuning the facilities to guarantee the safe and sustainable transport of this vital resource. The operational timeline is already in place, with an initial phase commencing this April, aiming to inject 40 million cubic meters of water per year into the supply system. By June, this capacity is expected to double, reaching a remarkable total of 80 million cubic meters annually, thereby significantly relieving the water stress in the region.

Innovative Solutions to Water Scarcity in Morocco

This mega desalination project marks a significant stride toward securing a reliable supply of drinking water for the region, particularly in light of the persistent water stress affecting Morocco. In response to the increasing pressure on its water resources, the Moroccan government is accelerating its initiatives to develop innovative solutions. Ahmed El Bouari, Morocco's Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests, has unveiled an ambitious program aimed at constructing additional seawater desalination plants, in alignment with royal directives. The goal is to produce over 1.7 billion cubic meters of desalinated water by the year 2030.

Moreover, the Moroccan government has set an ambitious target to source 60% of the country's drinking water from desalination by 2030, a significant increase from the current rate of 25%. This transition will be powered exclusively by green energy, highlighting Morocco's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. As the nation grapples with chronic drought conditions, these efforts underscore its resolve to secure water availability for its citizens, while also aiming for a sustainable future.
