Marrakech's Law Enforcement Targets Bootleg Alcohol Production
The newly appointed commander of the judicial police in Marrakech, Younes Aakifi, has launched a significant crackdown on illegal alcohol production within his first week in office. This initiative aligns with directives from the regional authorities aimed at combating various forms of crime. Aakifi's proactive approach has led to a series of operations targeting drug trafficking and the illicit production of traditional homemade alcohol known locally as "Maa al-Hayat" or "Water of Life."
Intensive investigations carried out under the direct supervision of Aakifi have successfully dismantled a network specializing in the wholesale production and distribution of this banned substance. The investigation revealed that the network's members, hailing from the regions of Qalaat Sraghna and Wadi Zam, were responsible for supplying significant quantities of the illicit alcohol to various dealers across Marrakech and its surrounding areas.
As a result of coordinated security operations, multiple simultaneous raids were executed in several known hotspots, including Douar Kanan in the Northern Nakhil district and Douar Sraghna in the Gueliz district, among other locations in the outskirts of Marrakech. Authorities seized over a ton of "Maa al-Hayat" along with equipment and tools used for its production and distillation, marking a significant blow to the illegal alcohol trade in the region.
The operation also led to the apprehension of several suspects, including individuals with prior criminal records related to drug and illegal alcohol trafficking. These suspects have been placed under judicial custody while investigations continue to uncover all potential links associated with this network.
