Marrakech's Water Supply Enhancement: The Near Completion of the Desalination Project
The ambitious project for transporting desalinated seawater from Safi to Marrakech is nearing its operational phase, boasting an impressive 98% completion rate. This strategic water initiative aims to bolster and secure the potable water supply for the vibrant city of Marrakech, by creating an additional water resource capable of meeting the growing demands of the region in the forthcoming years. The project's infrastructure spans approximately 185 kilometers, incorporating a network of pipelines, hydraulic structures, and three main pumping stations, along with several reservoirs and control installations, culminating in the "Ram Ram" reservoir located north of Marrakech. Upon reaching its targeted capacity, the system is designed to deliver approximately 3.2 cubic meters per second, translating to around 100 million cubic meters of water annually.
As the project has progressed into its final stages, significant advancements have been made. The focus has shifted from fundamental construction tasks to finalizing equipment and conducting essential technical tests to ensure the readiness of all system components, including pipelines, pumping stations, reservoirs, and control systems, in preparation for the actual operations. The total investment for this transformative project is estimated at approximately 4.2 billion dirhams, reflecting the commitment to enhancing water security in the Marrakech-Safi region.
The commissioning of this system is expected to significantly diversify the water sources available to Marrakech by leveraging the desalinated water produced at the Safi facility and transporting it to urban consumption centers via an extensive water distribution network. This will alleviate pressure on traditional water resources and enhance the city's capacity to confront the challenges posed by water scarcity and increasing demand, particularly in light of the ongoing population growth and urban and economic development experienced in Marrakech.
