Marsa Maroc Enhances Efficiency with New Liebherr LPS 550 Crane

Marsa Maroc, a key player in the Moroccan port industry, has recently made a significant investment in its bulk handling capabilities by acquiring a Liebherr LPS 550 port crane for operations at the port of Casablanca. This advanced crane has already been shipped from Rostock, Germany, and is set to become the first unit of Liebherr's LPS range to operate in Africa upon its installation and commissioning. The acquisition signifies Marsa Maroc's commitment to modernizing its equipment and enhancing operational efficiency within the region.

The Liebherr LPS 550, which departed from the Liebherr-Rostock manufacturing facility on the heavy-lift vessel _MV Patricia_, is designed with a robust electric drive and features an impressive 48-meter boom. Its unique configuration has been crafted specifically to meet the demands of bulk operations in Casablanca, allowing for efficient handling of various cargo types, including containers, steel products, cereals, and minerals. The gantry crane's design not only optimizes performance but also ensures that the area beneath the structure remains clear, facilitating smooth circulation and operations at the dock.

Liebherr emphasizes that the LPS 550 is engineered for precision, providing seamless movements during intense cargo handling cycles, which is crucial for maintaining high productivity levels in busy port environments. The crane's installation will be tailored to the operational characteristics of the Casablanca port, ensuring that it integrates seamlessly into existing workflows.

This strategic acquisition is part of Marsa Maroc's broader investment program aimed at bolstering its cargo handling capacity across various port facilities throughout Morocco. The company recently reported handling over 19 million tons of cargo and nearly 1.1 million TEUs in Casablanca alone during 2025. Furthermore, Marsa Maroc is actively developing the Marsa 2030 program, which includes initiatives focused on enhancing equipment and operational capacity at its terminals.

As the first LPS crane from Liebherr to be deployed in Africa, the LPS 550 represents a significant milestone for both Marsa Maroc and the Liebherr brand in the region. Andreas Ritschel, the general manager of mobile port cranes at Liebherr-Rostock, pointed out that this new addition to the fleet is specifically tailored to address the unique needs of bulk operations, reinforcing the strong relationship between Marsa Maroc and Liebherr.

The arrival of the LPS 550 at Marsa Maroc's Casablanca terminal is set to enhance the port's operational capabilities, marking a new chapter in the company's commitment to investing in modern, efficient equipment to support Morocco's growing logistics and maritime sectors.
