Land Expropriation Paves the Way for High-Speed Train Between Marrakech and Agadir
In a significant development for Morocco’s transportation infrastructure, the latest issue of the official gazette has published decree number 2.26.605. This decree states that the public interest necessitates the construction of a high-speed railway line connecting Marrakech to Agadir and linking Chichaoua to Essaouira, within the territories of the Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa regions. This initiative marks a crucial step towards the expropriation of land designated for the railway line.
This decree is part of the implementation of law number 7.81, which pertains to expropriation for public utility and temporary occupation, as established by the royal decree number 1.81.254 dated May 14, 1982, and also follows decree number 2.82.382 issued on April 16, 1983, which applies this law. According to the decree, the railway line will be constructed according to the route specified in the accompanying site plan that is scaled at 1:50,000.
Furthermore, the execution of the provisions of this decree, which will take effect upon its publication in the official gazette, has been assigned to the Minister of Transport and Logistics. The projects involve two strategic routes aimed at enhancing railway connectivity between various cities and regions. The high-speed train will facilitate travel between Marrakech and Agadir, while another line will establish a link between Chichaoua and Essaouira.
