Martin Margiela's Personal Archive Auction: A Celebration of Fashion Legacy

Martin Margiela's Upcoming Auction: A Glimpse into Fashion History

The enigmatic world of fashion is set to reveal some of its secrets as Martin Margiela prepares for a highly anticipated auction of his personal archives. Scheduled for July 9, 2026, in Paris, this extraordinary event is organized by Maurice Auction in collaboration with Kerry Taylor Auctions. The exact venue will be disclosed in June, but prior to the auction, a public exhibition showcasing the auction items will take place from July 4 to July 8 at Maurice Auction's location on Rue La Boétie in Paris' 8th arrondissement. With over 200 lots that chronicle Margiela's illustrious career—from his early creations in 1984 for the Canette d’Or in Antwerp to his departure from the brand bearing his name in 2008—the auction promises to be a pivotal moment for both collectors and fashion enthusiasts alike.

A Personal Reflection and a Move Towards Legacy

In a heartfelt statement, Margiela expressed his decision to part with these cherished pieces that have been in his possession for many years, stating, “After many years of moving my archives from place to place and lending some pieces for exhibitions, I felt it was time to let go of a part of my memories related to fashion. The collection covers a period from 1984 to 2008 and consists of photographs, drawings, and objects, with some later pieces created during the pandemic. After much contemplation, the idea of bringing joy to several collectors and institutions ultimately motivated me to share them with the world.” The announcement has generated significant excitement among fashion creators, media, and fans alike. In January 2025, Maurice Auction and Kerry Taylor Auctions had previously collaborated on a successful auction titled “Martin Margiela, The Early Years,” which featured early works from the designer’s personal collections and achieved an impressive total of €1,889,000, marking it as the highest amount ever raised at a fashion auction in France.

Salomé Pirson, the auctioneer for the upcoming event, noted, “Martin Margiela is a creative genius, and his archives showcase the depth of his thought, not just about clothing but also about humanity in general. Every piece in his collection reflects how remarkably he has inspired young creators—his work transcends time and is beyond mere fashion.” This auction stands not only as a celebration of Margiela's contributions to the fashion industry but also as a significant milestone in the preservation and appreciation of fashion history.
