Just the week prior, regional authorities reported that more than 1,500 migrants had arrived in the city via swimming, highlighting the ongoing challenges posed by migration across the Mediterranean region.
In response to this surge in migrant arrivals, Juan Jesus Vivas, the head of the Ceuta government, urged the Spanish government to declare a state of emergency due to the overwhelming number of new arrivals. Ceuta, along with the nearby Spanish enclave of Melilla, represents the only land border between the European Union and Africa, making it a focal point for migrants attempting to reach Europe via this route.
