Massive Demonstration in Rabat Shows Solidarity with Palestinian People

Thousands March in Rabat to Support Palestine Amid Rising Tensions

The center of Rabat witnessed a massive demonstration where thousands of citizens gathered to express their unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people. This mobilization was triggered by the recent Israeli offensive and escalating tensions in the region, transforming the iconic Mohamed V Avenue, located in front of the Moroccan Parliament, into the heart of the protest, all under the watchful eye of a robust security presence.

Organized by the National Action Group for Palestine, a coalition that includes trade unions, leftist parties, and civil society organizations, the march served as a platform for demonstrators to firmly denounce the recent escalation of Israeli actions within Palestinian territories, particularly highlighting the closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. According to the organizers, this closure is a direct consequence of the attacks that commenced on February 28, involving Tel Aviv, Washington, and Iran, which Israel justified by declaring a 'national state of emergency.'

During the protest, participants also condemned the recent approval of the 'Death Penalty for Terrorists' law by the Israeli Parliament, a measure that has raised concerns among international organizations and is viewed by demonstrators as a direct threat to Palestinian prisoners. A critical point of contention during the day was the denunciation of the so-called 'normalization' of relations with Israel. Attendees expressed their discontent regarding the agreement reached in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, which allowed Morocco to normalize its ties with Israel in exchange for U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Amidst an array of Palestinian flags and the widespread display of the traditional Palestinian scarf, the 'kufiya,' chants such as 'the Moroccan people stand with the Palestinian people' resonated through the crowd, along with calls for the right to life and support for prisoners. In a powerful symbolic act, an Israeli flag was even burned in front of the Parliament building. Despite the emotional intensity of the protest and the burning of symbols, the demonstration unfolded without any notable incidents.

The heavy police presence ensured that the march navigated through the main streets of the capital without disrupting public order, allowing Moroccan social groups to deliver a clear message against what they termed the 'enemy of all.' This demonstration underscores the position of a significant segment of Moroccan civil society, which, despite official diplomatic agreements, maintains a historic and active commitment to the Palestinian cause in North Africa.
