Significant Crackdown on Drug Trafficking in Morocco
In a remarkable operation conducted on June 8, 2026, Moroccan authorities arrested eleven individuals suspected of being involved in drug trafficking, particularly cocaine smuggling into Europe via the Belgian port of Antwerp. This extensive police action took place in the cities of Tangier and Marrakech, where law enforcement agencies targeted these suspects, many of whom hold dual Moroccan and European nationalities, including Belgian, Dutch, and French citizens. Notably among those apprehended was Abdelilah El Messaoudi, a 34-year-old Moroccan-Belgian, who had been on the run since 2020 after receiving a 34-year prison sentence in Belgium for his role in drug trafficking. His arrest occurred at the luxurious Four Seasons hotel in Marrakech after he had previously evaded capture by passing through Dubai and Turkey.
Interpol Involvement and Ongoing Legal Proceedings
El Messaoudi, whose criminal activities have reportedly netted him around 43 million euros from cocaine imports, is now facing a new trial in Morocco as law enforcement continues to crack down on international drug trafficking networks. The operation also resulted in the arrest of ten other suspects, all of whom were already subjects of arrest warrants and Interpol’s red notices due to their involvement in organized crime, money laundering, and drug trafficking. This operation highlights Morocco's ongoing battle against drug lords and the increasing collaboration between Moroccan authorities and European nations in tackling drug-related crimes. In recent years, prominent European drug traffickers, such as Moussa Falcone in 2025 and Félix Bingui the previous year, have been captured in Morocco, demonstrating the country’s strategic role in international drug enforcement efforts. Due to Moroccan laws prohibiting the extradition of its citizens, European nations are enhancing judicial and security cooperation with Morocco to address these challenges effectively.
