Massive Hashish Shipment Intercepted from Morocco to Spain: Five Convicted

Crackdown on Drug Trafficking: A Major Interception

A Spanish court has recently underscored the alarming rise in drug trafficking networks operating between Morocco and Europe, following the conviction of five individuals involved in smuggling an astonishing 13.7 tons of hashish into Spain. This operation, which saw the illicit cargo transported via a truck that originated from the northeastern port of Nador in Morocco, is regarded as one of the largest drug smuggling cases uncovered in recent times. The regional court in Almería, situated in southeastern Spain, not only sentenced the defendants to prison but also imposed hefty fines totaling €100 million. Furthermore, four of the convicted individuals will face deportation from Spain for a duration of seven years after serving three-quarters of their sentences, although they maintain the right to appeal the ruling.

Continued Concerns Over Drug Trafficking

This case has reignited European concerns regarding the persistent influx of substantial quantities of drugs flowing from Morocco, amid allegations that local authorities are turning a blind eye to the activities of smuggling networks and organized crime. Such negligence poses significant security and social threats to neighboring countries and Europe as a whole. The court revealed that the criminal network had been plotting this operation since before June 2025, aiming to smuggle a considerable amount of cannabis resin into Spain for distribution and sale. Roles were meticulously assigned among the conspirators to ensure the successful departure of the shipment from Morocco and its arrival at a warehouse in Almería.

Investigations uncovered the involvement of a sixth suspect, currently at large, who rented the trailer used in the operation on June 17, 2025. The hashish was cunningly concealed among a shipment of watermelons and inside plastic molds designed to resemble potatoes, serving to avoid detection. The truck departed from Nador and reached Almería on June 19, 2025. However, Spanish law enforcement had been tracking its movements as part of a broader anti-drug operation. Utilizing GPS tracking technology, investigators monitored the truck's erratic route through various areas and gas stations before it headed towards an industrial zone in Huércal de Almería.

Once the truck entered a warehouse, police executed a raid that led to the seizure of numerous bundles filled with hashish, cleverly hidden behind watermelon pallets, along with bags that initially appeared to contain potatoes but were later identified as plastic molds housing slabs of cannabis resin. Spanish authorities estimated the value of the confiscated drugs to exceed €25 million, reflecting the scale of the underground economy linked to drug trafficking and the ongoing benefits that smuggling networks derive from lax enforcement by Moroccan authorities.

The court affirmed that all defendants were fully aware of the nature of the shipment and noted that discrepancies in their testimonies during investigation and trial contributed to the substantiation of the charges against them. This operation, dubbed 'San Pedro,' forms part of a series of reports and law enforcement actions in Europe that connect Morocco with drug trafficking routes into the continent, renewing criticisms regarding the ongoing flow of these substances across the Mediterranean and the negative implications they have on security, economy, and society within European nations.
