Massive Turnout at Moroccan Consulate in Almería for Upcoming Regularization Process

Since Saturday, approximately 8,000 individuals have flocked to the Moroccan consulate in Almería, seeking essential documentation in light of an upcoming extraordinary regularization process announced by the government. Among the most sought-after documents is the certificate demonstrating a lack of criminal records in their country of origin, a crucial requirement for those aiming to secure their legal status in Spain.

The influx was particularly significant over the weekend, although not everyone was there for official paperwork; many attendees accompanied family members or friends. Despite the initial rush, queues have persisted throughout the week, with individuals arriving early in the morning to ensure they are attended to promptly.

Among the hopefuls is Yessine, a 26-year-old who has resided in Almería for two years. He visited the consulate for the first time after being encouraged by his family, who had already started their own applications. Currently, Yessine is engaged in temporary work within the hospitality sector, juggling various casual jobs.

This surge in applications aligns with expectations that the government will soon approve the decree governing this regularization process. As announced, online applications will be available starting April 16, with in-person submissions commencing on April 20, and the application window remaining open until the end of June.

Authorities at the Government Subdelegation have urged calm amid the long lines, reminding applicants that many procedures can be completed online, eliminating the need for an immediate visit to the consulate. They further advise individuals to seek information only through official channels to avoid confusion and misinformation.

This regularization initiative is specifically designed for undocumented foreign nationals who were present in Spain before January 1, 2026, can prove they have resided in the country for at least five months, and have no criminal records.
