Matthias Walkner Celebrates a Landmark Win at the Morocco Rally

In an exhilarating conclusion to the Morocco Rally, Salzburg's motorsport champion, Matthias Walkner, alongside his co-driver Oriol Mena, emerged victorious in the T4-SSV class. The duo's triumph marks a significant milestone for Walkner, who transitioned from a successful motorcycle career to off-road racing, showcasing his versatility and tenacity on four wheels. This victory was secured on the final stage, where they clinched their third stage win, propelling them to the top of the overall standings.

The final leg of the race covered a challenging 259 kilometers, starting and ending in Zagora, and it proved to be a nail-biter. Entering the day, Walkner and Mena were only nine seconds ahead of their closest rivals, the Argentine duo of Jeremías González Ferioli and Gonzalo Rinaldi. However, technical difficulties early in the stage hindered the Argentinians, allowing Walkner and Mena to maintain a strong pace and ultimately finish ahead of the French team of Andrea Deldossi and Jérémy Tricaud, securing their place in the lead.

A Thrilling Finish and Future Aspirations

With this win, Walkner and Mena not only topped their class but also advanced to 20th in the overall car rankings, an impressive feat considering that SSV category vehicles are limited to a maximum speed of 125 km/h, unlike their Ultimate class counterparts. After the race, Walkner expressed his elation, stating, "This is incredibly cool; I am absolutely thrilled! The final moments were very tense, and I had no idea about Ferioli's mechanical failure until we were well into the race. We had to push hard to stay ahead, especially after our buggy overheated, forcing us to stop and cool the engine. It was a relief to realize we just needed to bring it home safely after seeing that Ferioli was out."

As Walkner looks forward to his debut at the Dakar Rally in January, he expressed confidence in his vehicle's performance and his partnership with Mena, emphasizing their focus on the challenges that lie ahead. The success in Morocco not only solidifies Walkner's status as a formidable competitor in the world of off-road racing but also sets the stage for what promises to be an exciting Dakar Rally campaign.
