Media Outcry in Marrakech- Safi Over Controversial Aid Proposal for Journalists

The media landscape in the Marrakech-Safi region is currently experiencing a wave of professional discontent following the publication of an article that called for providing material assistance to individuals referred to as "media correspondents" in light of the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebrations. This proposal has generated significant backlash within journalistic circles, as it is perceived to undermine the integrity of journalism and diminish its institutional role.

In response to this situation, the regional branch of the National Union of Moroccan Journalists in Marrakech-Safi has expressed its firm disapproval of what it deems behavior that disrespects the dignity of journalists and threatens the profession's standing. They have stated their dissociation from such initiatives, asserting that they do not reflect the values and ethics of professional journalism.

Mohamed Abdellah Talabi, the newly elected regional secretary, shared in a press statement that the union, as a representative professional body, categorically rejects all practices that could tarnish the image of the journalistic community or associate it with privileges and undue benefits. He emphasized that journalism is a profession governed by law, grounded in independence and professional dignity.

Talabi further elaborated that the profession encompasses professional journalists, freelancers, and honorary members, all unified by principles of commitment and responsibility. He stressed that they cannot be reduced to demands of a charitable nature that compromise their professionalism.

The union representative urged the authorities of the Marrakech-Safi region to investigate the identities of those who claim to speak or represent journalists outside of legal and institutional frameworks. He called for the enforcement of laws against anyone who exploits the title of journalist for personal gain unrelated to professional practice.

Additionally, the regional branch of the National Union of Moroccan Journalists has asserted its right to take necessary legal actions against those who harm the media and journalism sector or propagate negative images that could tarnish the reputation of its professionals. This could include pursuing legal action against any acts that could be considered slanderous or damaging to the dignity of the profession.

This stance emerges amid growing calls within the journalistic community to uphold the ethics of the profession and to bolster the distinction between legitimate journalistic work and practices that could harm its image and status within society.
