Mediteranean University Conference Issues 'Fes Message' on Human Civilization and Artificial Intelligence

Concluding Insights from the Mediterranean University Conference

The Mediterranean University hosted an international conference titled "The Future of Human Civilization in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" in Fes, Morocco, under the esteemed patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. The event culminated in the release of the "Fes Message on Human Civilization and Artificial Intelligence," which was made possible by the participation of prominent figures, including His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Al-Issa, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League and Chairman of the Council of Muslim Scholars, who delivered the keynote address. The conference gathered over 2,000 participants, including global leaders, representatives from the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, and esteemed academics and thinkers from 75 nations.

In the concluding statement of the conference, participants unanimously recognized that artificial intelligence (AI) presents a significant opportunity for enhancing human progress, provided it is developed within a framework that respects universal values, human dignity, and principles of fairness. They emphasized the necessity for AI governance to be founded on principles of transparency, accountability, and interpretability to foster trust in intelligent systems.

Moreover, the attendees pointed out that challenges related to algorithmic biases and data quality necessitate the establishment of adaptable and appropriate international regulatory frameworks. They highlighted the promising applications of AI in health and other sectors while stressing the importance of data protection and ensuring scientific reliability. Participants asserted that building trust in AI systems requires the development of evaluation, auditing, and monitoring mechanisms that better integrate the human dimension.

The discussions also underscored that AI serves as a strategic lever in international relations, necessitating enhanced multilateral cooperation to prevent technological fragmentation and imbalances that could favor certain parties at the expense of others. The risks associated with cybersecurity, misinformation, and hate speech demand the development of effective monitoring, alerting, and response mechanisms. Furthermore, there was a call to encourage the development of AI models that respect cultural and linguistic particularities, thereby promoting digital sovereignty and equitable access to technology.

Investment in youth, human capital, and infrastructure was identified as a foundational pillar for building a responsible and inclusive digital future. The conference concluded with a strong emphasis on directing AI to serve peace, sustainable development, and to foster reconciliation among cultures and civilizations.

The conference featured four main sessions addressing topics such as "Questions of Transparency, Accountability, and Trust: Foundations for Global Governance in the Age of AI," "AI Applications and Ethics in Healthcare," and "AI as an Opportunity to Revitalize Shared Human Values." Additionally, discussions revolved around "Future Scenarios for Civilization in the Age of AI." Complementing these discussions were five parallel sessions covering themes like "Coexistence in the AI Era," "AI Governance and Its Impact on Development," and "AI Ethics: From Principles to Civilizational Practices," among others. These sessions collectively provided an international platform for dialogue and strategic thinking on the profound transformations imposed by artificial intelligence.
