Significant Progress on the Marrakech-Agadir TGV Project
The ambitious extension of the high-speed train (TGV) line connecting Marrakech and Agadir has reached a crucial milestone. With comprehensive studies completed and a projected budget of approximately 55 billion dirhams, Moroccan authorities are actively seeking international funding to facilitate the crossing of the challenging High Atlas mountains. The development of this second high-speed segment presents a substantial technical challenge, as the finalized studies highlight the complexity of the route that must navigate the rugged terrain of the High Atlas range.
During a recent session at the House of Representatives, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, elaborated on the extensive nature of these works. He noted that the projects involve nearly 70% of the construction of bridges and tunnels, covering a distance exceeding 35 kilometers. Such major infrastructural endeavors necessitate significant investments, and the financial requirements to link Marrakech, known as the 'ochre city,' to Agadir, the capital of the Souss region, are substantial.
In light of this considerable financial undertaking, Moroccan authorities are reaching out to foreign partners to realize this vital extension of the railway network. The minister emphasized that the National Office of Railways (ONCF) is currently engaged in a global search for financing options to support this project. This development marks a transformative phase for Morocco's rail infrastructure and promises to enhance connectivity and mobility between these two key cities.
