Understanding the Military Partnership and Its Implications
The Canary Islands government, led by the Canarian Coalition and the Popular Party, is expressing caution towards the increasing military cooperation between Morocco and the United States. Manuel Domínguez, the Vice President of the Canary executive, voiced concerns regarding the military movements of Morocco, indicating the necessity for Spain to remain vigilant. He stated, "It is imperative to stay alert to the military maneuvers of a neighboring country," highlighting that this situation raises alarms not just for Spain but particularly for the Canary Islands. Domínguez pointed out that Spain has shown a lack of interest in Morocco's military drills, referencing the incident at Ceuta as an example of this indifference.
Despite his concerns, Domínguez refrained from directly criticizing the Trump administration for the establishment of the African Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center (AMTEC) in Tan-Tan, which was recently the site of a live missile test. Instead, he directed his criticism towards Morocco, asserting that the country would not cease its ambitions until it achieves its goals, which he claims extend beyond the Sahara to include Ceuta and Melilla. He emphasized that Spain has previously enjoyed better international relations with Morocco, which now appears to be exploiting the perceived weaknesses of a government that seems indifferent to the security of its territories. According to him, the relationship between Spain and Morocco must evolve based on mutual respect to ensure security and cooperation.
This statement from Domínguez comes shortly after Cristina Valido, a deputy from the Canarian Coalition, submitted written questions to the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, regarding the strengthening of military ties between Morocco and the USA. Such political actions signal a growing concern within the Canary Islands about how these developments could impact regional stability and security.
