Rescue Operation Brings Hope After Days at Sea

In a remarkable turn of events, two French sailors who had been missing for four days after abandoning their catamaran have been found safe and sound off the coast of Morocco. The duo disappeared after their vessel encountered difficulties late Sunday night due to a flooding issue. Thankfully, a merchant ship was able to locate them on Thursday evening, marking the end of a tense search operation that had gripped both the families of the missing sailors and the maritime community.

According to a statement from the National Maritime Coordination and Rescue Center, the merchant vessel successfully identified the sailors after receiving a distress signal that alerted all ships within the search perimeter. A representative from the Center confirmed that the sailors were safely recovered and the identification process was conducted with the assistance of the ship's crew. They are expected to be disembarked in Cadiz, Spain, later that night.

The Distress Signal and Search Efforts

The ordeal began early Sunday, around 01:15 GMT, when the Center received an alert indicating that the catamaran, named "Stella," was in trouble. Adrien Danzé, the father of Vincent, one of the missing sailors aged 25, reported that a distress signal about water ingress was sent out, followed by another message indicating that the crew was abandoning the vessel for the dinghy. The catamaran was on its way from Martinique to a European port, either Barcelona or Marseille, when the incident occurred.

Subsequent to the distress call, the catamaran was found adrift, along with a lifeboat, empty approximately three nautical miles off the coast of Tangier. In response, a large-scale search operation was launched, involving two planes, helicopters, and three maritime units from the Moroccan authorities, alongside divers and rescue teams combing the coastline. French naval support was also deployed, further enhancing the search efforts.

As the search expanded into Spanish waters by Wednesday, the uncertainty surrounding the incident grew, particularly as the sailors did not have a distress beacon onboard. The causes of their unfortunate situation remain unknown, but the incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by sailors on the open sea.
