Mohamed Nabil Benabdallah Set to Step Down from PPS Leadership

In a significant political development, Mohamed Nabil Benabdallah, the Secretary-General of the Party of Progress and Socialism (Parti du Progrès et du Socialisme, PPS), has announced his impending resignation from the party's leadership. During an interview with the Moroccan television channel 2M, Benabdallah revealed that the next national party congress is scheduled to take place in a few months, at which point a new leadership will be elected, and he will not be a part of it.

Benabdallah justified his decision by stating that the PPS is well-equipped with qualified individuals, particularly among its younger members and women, who have accumulated years of experience within the party structures and are capable of taking over the leadership responsibilities. This shift indicates a potential generational change within the party, which has been a topic of discussion in recent media appearances where Benabdallah was questioned about his long tenure since May 2010.

Born in Rabat in 1959, Mohamed Benabdallah pursued his studies in language and translation sciences at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (INALCO) in Paris. Prior to ascending to the party's top position, he led the party's newspapers, Al Bayane and Bayane Al Yaoume. His political influence has shaped the Moroccan political landscape for decades, serving as Minister of Communications and government spokesperson from 2002 to 2007 under Prime Minister Driss Jettou, and briefly as Morocco's ambassador to Greece in 2009.

Under Benabdallah's leadership, the PPS adopted a pragmatic approach starting in 2011, forming a coalition with the Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD). He held the position of Minister of Housing and Urban Development from 2012 to 2017 in the administrations of Prime Ministers Abdelilah Benkirane and Saadeddine El Othmani. In October 2019, he led the PPS out of the governing majority into opposition.

With this latest announcement, the PPS is now preparing for an orderly transition at its helm, although the candidates for his successor have yet to be determined. This move reflects the party's ongoing commitment to rejuvenation and adaptation in the face of evolving political dynamics.
