Mohamed Ouahbi Remains Head Coach of Morocco's National Team Despite Quarterfinal Exit

Mohamed Ouahbi Retains Head Coach Position for Morocco

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially confirmed the continuation of Mohamed Ouahbi as the head coach of the national football team. This decision comes on the heels of Morocco's recent elimination from the 2026 World Cup, where they faced a disappointing quarterfinal defeat against France. The announcement was made following a meeting of the FRMF Executive Committee on Thursday, where they expressed their confidence in Ouahbi's leadership despite some criticism from certain segments of the fanbase.

Ouahbi, who took over the coaching reins in March, replacing Walid Regragui just months before the World Cup, is set to continue guiding the team. Although the FRMF did not specify the duration of Ouahbi’s contract at the time of his appointment, he revealed in a May interview with beIN Sports that his contract is expected to last until the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal.

During the North American World Cup, Morocco achieved a significant milestone by defeating the Netherlands in the round of 16. However, they could not overcome the formidable French team, led by star player Kylian Mbappé, ultimately losing the match 2-0. This performance sparked mixed reactions; while some media outlets and fans expressed disappointment over the team’s gameplay in the quarterfinals, others chose to highlight the overall success of the squad, which marked its second-best performance in World Cup history, only surpassed by their semifinal appearance in Qatar 2022.
