Mohamed Touchassie Clinches Glory Light Heavyweight Grand Prix Title Amidst Challenges

Mohamed Touchassie's Remarkable Journey to Championship Glory

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Moroccan kickboxer Mohamed Touchassie emerged victorious at the Glory Light Heavyweight Grand Prix held in Rotterdam, earning the prestigious title of world champion after an intense night that ultimately led to his hospitalization. At just 24 years old, Touchassie showcased his formidable talent by defeating three opponents in one evening, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning career.

The journey to the championship began with a surprising upset against Azerbaijani favorite Bahram Rajabzadeh during the quarter-finals. Despite sustaining a serious cut above his left eye in the second round, Touchassie’s resilience shone through as he delivered a knockdown in the third round, securing a hard-fought victory. The semi-finals saw him face Cem Caceres, where the wear and tear of the tournament became increasingly evident, with injuries accumulating on his face yet failing to deter his spirit.

The final match pitted Touchassie against former middleweight world champion Donovan Wisse. This bout was a nail-biter, filled with back-and-forth exchanges that kept fans on the edge of their seats. Ultimately, after a closely contested fight, the judges rendered a split decision, awarding the title to Touchassie and crowning him as the new Glory light heavyweight champion.

However, the excitement of victory was soon overshadowed by health concerns. Following the match, Touchassie struggled to continue with post-fight interviews, indicating that he required immediate medical assistance. He was treated by paramedics outside the Ahoy Arena before being transported to a nearby hospital. Reports from his team revealed that he needed stitches for the gash over his eye and underwent a head scan for precautionary measures. Fortunately, he was discharged the following day, allowing him to recover from the rigors of the tournament.

His trainer, Saïd el Badaoui, provided reassurance post-discharge, stating, "Everything is okay. He has been discharged from the hospital, battered, but that's what tournaments are like." Touchassie's victory comes on the heels of former champion Tarik Khbabez vacating the title, thus paving the way for the Grand Prix winner to attain world champion status.
