The historical connection between Montpellier and Morocco dates back to 2003 when the Hérault prefecture established a twinning with Fès. This second edition of the economic forum builds on the success of its inaugural event held just a year prior, which attracted over 200 participants and featured 20 speakers, showcasing a robust interest in fostering bilateral relations.
A notable outcome from the first edition of "Cap sur le Maroc" is the establishment of a research and development partnership between MGH Energy, a local company specializing in low-carbon synthetic fuels for decarbonizing maritime and air transport, and the Moroccan Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRISEN). This partnership emphasizes the shared ambitions of both territories, particularly in light of significant economic transformations occurring in Morocco due to substantial investments.
Building Future Opportunities Together
This year's forum is strategically timed to coincide with the Montpellier Arabesques Festival, running from September 8 to 20. The theme for the 2026 event is "Building Economic Opportunities Together for 2030," and it will feature prominent figures such as Michaël Delafosse, Mayor of Montpellier and President of the Métropole; Jalil Benabdillah, Vice-President of the Occitanie Region in charge of the economy; André Deljarry, President of the Hérault CCI; and Lamiae Bennani, General Consul of the Kingdom of Morocco.
Participants will focus on amplifying exchanges between the Mediterranean shores by structuring sustainable cooperation in three key sectors identified as crucial: water, energy, and sports. The organizers believe these sectors offer genuine opportunities for development and innovation in the future, addressing vital issues such as energy transition, sustainable water management, and the economic legacy of major international sporting events.
The program includes a series of discussions and presentations that will delve into investment opportunities in Morocco, the transition to sustainable fuels, and collaborative strategies to tackle common challenges like water stress. The event will conclude with a networking cocktail at the Opéra Comédie, followed by the opening of the Arabesques Festival.
