Moroccan Authorities Arrest Key Suspect in Disturbing Child Alcohol Video

Arrest of Main Suspect Following Public Outcry

In a significant development, Moroccan police have apprehended the primary suspect linked to a distressing video that surfaced on social media, depicting a young child being coerced into consuming alcohol. The General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) confirmed the arrest on Friday, highlighting the swift response from law enforcement following the widespread outrage that the footage incited across the nation. The police action came after receiving crucial intelligence from the domestic intelligence agency, the DGST, which played a pivotal role in identifying and locating the suspect.

The viral video, which has drawn condemnation from various sectors of society, shows two adult men seemingly encouraging a young boy to drink what appears to be alcohol while one records the incident. In response to the public's indignation, police acted decisively, launching an investigation that led to the suspect's arrest in the El Khssassma Malin El Oued area, near Benslimane, in collaboration with the Royal Gendarmerie. Initial inquiries revealed that the apprehended suspect and his accomplice are brothers, with the child depicted in the video being the six-year-old son of their third sibling. While one brother is now in custody, the second has been identified and is currently on the run.

Calls for Accountability and Child Protection

The suspect in custody is now facing judicial scrutiny under the oversight of the relevant public prosecutor's office. Authorities are diligently working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this alarming incident, aiming to establish a timeline of events and identify all parties involved. The public's reaction to the video has been overwhelmingly negative, with social media users expressing their horror and labeling the actions witnessed in the footage as abusive and deeply troubling. Activists advocating for child protection and various human rights entities have vocally condemned the incident, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and enhanced safeguards for children in the digital realm.

The organization Matqissch Weldi, translating to "Don’t Touch My Child," has decried the incident as a grave violation of children's rights, asserting that the child's physical and psychological welfare has been compromised. The group has called for those responsible to be held legally accountable and urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation. They also cautioned against the further dissemination of the video, highlighting the potential harm it could inflict on the child.

Moreover, the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) has voiced its concerns regarding the case. CNDH President Amina Bouayach condemned not only the treatment of the child but also the act of filming and distributing the video online. She expressed that revealing the child's identity could exacerbate his psychological trauma and expose him to stigma and bullying. Bouayach has called for social media users and media outlets to refrain from sharing the footage without obscuring the child’s identity and urged prosecutors to take immediate action to safeguard the child's rights and dignity throughout the ongoing legal proceedings.
